Portrait comes from the Latin RETRACTUS, "to take, to pull", something like "to take out" an image. Historically, portrait paintings represent the rich and powerful.

Is it expensive?

Full-length portraits, 2+ meter high paintings are extremely laborious and expensive, of course.
